〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Proinsias Cassidy
CHARACTER AGE: 119 years old
SERIES: Preacher
CHRONOLOGY: End of s2 ep12 Canon updated to end of s3 finale
CLASS: Morally ambiguous sidekick
HOUSING: Any!

BACKGROUND:
While Preacher shares many similarities to the modern world, there’s a much more notable presence of religion, specifically Christianity. God, heaven and hell all exist within it’s Universe, along with an organisation known as Grail Industries who have direct link to it all. Vampires also play a part in the world, and while not widely known about they have their presence, especially with online fanbases, and don’t appear to be a huge surprise to any who find out about them, there’s also religious sects of vampire hunters who try to rid the world of them.

When a half breed entity known as Genesis escapes from Heaven, it finds a host in a Texas preacher by the name of Jesse Custer, granting him the power to influence any being with a soul just by the power of his voice. At he same time, God goes missing from heaven, resulting in a scramble to not only locate Them, but also for the powers that be to try and get Genesis back up to Heaven and out of the hands of humanity.

Cassidy, an 119 year old vampire, rather literally falls into the whole situation, making fast friends with Preacher Jesse and his girlfriend Tulip, and deciding to tag along with their adventures. An in-depth description of his participation in it all can be found at the wiki.

PERSONALITY:
Jesse Custer: Look, I'm just sayin', boring's not the worst thing a person can be, Cassidy.
Proinsias Cassidy: I think you're wrong. I think boring's the worst.

A bit of an oddball in both appearance and speech, Cassidy is more likely sticking out than blending into crowds, his rather unique sense of mismatched style pairing with his numerous eccentricities. He comes across as loud and eager upon first impressions, social and outgoing with every stranger he meets and able to talk about anything and everything when it comes to topics. Because of this, Cassidy’s easy to be around and tends to make friends quickly, keeping strangers enraptured by ridiculous tales, if they can handle his heavy handed opinions, of which he has a lot. In fact Proinsias has opinions on everything and usually isn’t afraid to say them, one for telling it like it is rather than holding anything back thanks to a total lack of any filter. He’ll gladly tell people what he thinks of them, consequences be damned, although steers towards slightly more subtlety when dealing his those he cares about.

There’s an honesty to him that comes across as genuine, usually wearing his emotions on his sleeve for all to see which often adds to his draw with randoms. With Cassidy, what you see is what you get, and that tends to make him the heart of his friends back home, and a (mostly) reliable source for an honest opinion, having admitted himself that he’s “too old to be playing these games” suggesting that being forthright is just a much simpler approach in his eyes. While his two buddies, Jesse and Tulip, both struggle to be honest with themselves, others and their emotions, he’s the one pressuring them to think more on their actions. When Jesse accidentally condemns an innocent teen to hell, swiftly bottling up any sign of guilt or remorse and seemingly forgetting about it, it’s Proinsias who mentions the kid numerous times, asking what can be done to save him, even going so far as to risk sacrificing his own life to drive a point home that Jesse should stop casting judgment and start giving a shit about those close to him. Early on in Cassidy and Tulips friendship they sleep together, both unaware with their separate companionships with Jesse. While Tulip is quick to tell Cass to move on, he’s wracked with guilt over the whole ordeal, mentioning how he hates to lie to his best mate, Jesse, about what happened, and continues to carry this burden throughout the series, still visibly upset about it.

For an immortal vampire, Cass’ morals are relatively “good”. He’ll be the first to admit he’s a sinner, but almost every recent attack and death by his hands has been down to self defence, protecting himself or his closest friends from harm. Although it’s made clear that vampires have strong urges to kill others and drink their blood, Cassidy resists these base desires and usually only drinks from animals or donated blood. In the second season he turns his dying son into a vampire but his son soon becomes unwilling to ignore these base urges, causing clear concern for Proinsias, who repeatedly insists that blood should only be consumed when absolutely necessary, and not to be taken from victims. He even confiscates his son’s new dog after worrying for it's safety, keeping it hidden away and refusing to give it back until his son can prove he’ll behave.

Although resisting his need for blood, Cassidy is a hedonist in practically everything else, constantly chasing his other desires. Having lived several human life spans, he’s turned to drugs and alcohol to keep his interest alight, almost permanently high or drunk off of something and always after the new and the stimulating. His vampirism makes the drugs far less effective, and so he’s constantly thrill seeking to fill the void. With a general lack of purpose and a tendency to drift, he can appear lazy and self-obsessed, but with some prodding Cass will usually get around to whatever needs doing and can show a great care for others. When he finds out about Jesse’s power to control others with his voice, Cassidy shows optimism and excitement at the revelation, sticking by his friend’s side from then on to see how everything would pan out, eager for adventure and fiercely loyal.

He’s not all good though; an unapologetic, mischievous bullshitter who takes great enjoyment from talking shit, and no issue with injury or death to those that try and harm those he cares for. He takes the death of strangers in his stride, unconcerned with the concept of killing if the need arises and even making off handed jokes about it at times. Cassidy has frequently been on the wrong side of the law for everything from thieving to murder, but his own set of codes keep him from falling off the deep end. He’s not a malicious character, but there are times he’ll lie to benefit his own hedonism, especially if it gives him access to money and/or drugs. He’s a man you can probably trust with your deepest secrets, but not your wallet. There's the brooding too, those overflow of emotions sometimes setting into a level of upset, his long life having meant he's seen countless people come and go, and his close family and friends die, which brings with it his own issues with attachment and a difficulty to let go, still coming to terms with human mortality and his own lack of it. Just another reason to fill himself full of drugs and try to forget it all.

All in all, Proinsias sums himself up as “a lazy, lying, self-obsessed, drug-abusing, cheating fornicator with a filthy mouth and no ambition” as well as “just another shit faced Irishman”, but there’s far more depth to this old vampire than he likes to let on.

POWER:
Vampirism
An industry standard vampire with most of the trimmings, but a whole lot less pretty boy sparkle drama. Since his recent canon update, Cassidy now has added powers that he does not personally get in his own canon, but is seen in other vampires within the same canon. Abilities include:

- Immortality, Immunity and Resilience: As a vampire, Cassidy is classed as undead and therefore very difficult to actually kill. He hasn’t aged since the day he was bitten, still looking to be in his thirties while actually having been alive for around 120 years, plus he has consistently great physical health despite the masses of substances he ingests. He can also recover from virtually any injury, even surviving jumping out of a plane at 30,000 feet. Wounds will still hurt him and can incapacitate him, but he’s much more resistant and capable of fighting through the pain.
- Enhanced Strength, Reflexes and Senses: Better than that of any average human, Cassidy is capable of overpowering others, can react quicker and also has heightened senses. He’s frequently shown to take down multiple people at a time, and although not necessarily a trained fighter, he has experience of many decades brawling. Since obtaining his newer in game powers, all these have increased in ability, with his new strength allowing him to hit harder, throw the weight of a human across a room with total ease and carry greater weights, although that strength won’t extend much beyond lifting around a tonne. He may be able to tip a car or lift one end with some effort, but he won’t be throwing them around. Cassidy’s reflexes and speed will now be faster than standard human eyes can track, able to cover short distances at great speed that almost appear as teleportation to an average human, and capable of swiftly dodging normal hits sent his way. These abilities are linked with his blood consumption and it’s likely the longer it’s been since his last feeding, the weaker he is in all aspects.
- Blood Consumption and Regeneration: Like most vampires out there, Cassidy requires blood to sustain him, although this doesn’t have to be human as he gains seemingly the same benefits from animal blood. Drinking blood aids in much faster recovery from his injuries, able to heal up gunshot wounds with only a few mouthfuls of blood, and even shown to regenerate his entire body by eating a cow. The downside to the blood drinking is the blood lust, his base vampiric cravings needing to be satiated with blood otherwise running the risk of losing control of his self. Cassidy keeps himself topped up on donor blood bags for the most part, but were he to stop drinking it, he’d run the risk of killing humans.
- Shapeshifting: Cassidy will now be able to transform into a variety of animals! Although the range of transformations isn’t entirely known, it mostly appears to be restricted to smaller animals and won’t extend beyond something the size of a big cat (lion/tiger size).
- Flight: Being able to flit around the sky, likely uses similar amounts of energy that walking/light jogging would use. Also capable of carrying one other person.
- Mild hypnosis: With enough effort and intense staring, Cass can charm the weaker willed to do his bidding for a short period of time. Similar to that of a Jedi mind trick, they’ll feel compelled to do as he asks while under his control. This will wear off fairly swiftly if the connection is broken via lack of concentration or being out of range, but if not, will only remain for around quarter of an hour. Can be broken sooner or resisted.
- Weakness to Sun: By far Cassidy’s biggest weakness is direct sunlight, which appears to be the simplest way (and possibly one of the only ways) to kill vampires within his universe. While capable of walking around during the day when indoors or in shade, any direct exposure of sunlight to his bare skin will immediately cause him to burst into flames, and will kill within minutes. Cassidy’s main way of countering this weakness is wearing heavy clothing (long sleeves, hoods/hats, blankets or panchos, gloves etc) when outdoors, sunglasses to protect his eyes, and an umbrella to provide him shade. Sunscreen may also be of aid, but the validity of it hasn’t been tested in canon yet.

Temporary Power Sharing
Although unable to turn people into fully fledged vampires like he could do in his home world, Cassidy will be able to bite and turn any imPort or native into a fellow vampire for around twenty-four hours. During this time they will share the lesser powers of his, limited to immortality, regeneration, moderately enhanced abilities, blood consumption and aversion to sunlight. This could potentially bring back someone from the brink of death although still comes with the risk of turning someone who is unable to refrain from their new desire for blood, so even if limited to just 24hrs, there’s still the potential for someone to react like a blood starved beast. Depending on ooc player choice (but we can totally blame it icly on the uncertainty of genetics/nanos/conflicting powers etc), this power share can either work alongside other powers, or become the only power that character has for 24hrs. Plus it may heal any and all old wounds the character has, or it may only heal very recent ones/ones that occur while vampired. Basically just gives a bit of flexibility to all parties involved. Mostly Cassidy will just have to ensure anyone he does turn will be provided with several packets of donor blood to keep their cravings at bay until they turn back to normal. Thankfully once a day has past, the bitten subject shouldn’t suffer any ill effects.
